Advanced Resolve Metrics

A first PWHL advanced suite, built from coordinate-level shot data — not box scores. Four metrics across the goalie, offense, special-teams, and physical axes, each face-validity tested before it shipped.

Built from HockeyTech play-by-play across three PWHL seasons (~340 games). Shots carry on-ice x/y coordinates, so high-danger chances are defined by location, not guesswork.
Skater metrics are per game, not per-60 — the public PWHL feed has no skater time-on-ice. For a thin three-season league, per-game is the honest rate.
Small samples are empirical-Bayes shrunk toward the position-group mean (skaters) and the league high-danger save rate (goalies), so a 23-game rookie can't outrank a full-season star on noise.

Every Resolve PWHL advanced metric, with what it measures and how to read it. Each metric had to pass a face-validity gate before shipping — if a metric ranked someone obviously wrong, it got cut. Grouped by side (offense / defense / two-way / team).

Offense

Slot Threat(Slot Threat)

Who lives in the slot — high-danger shot generation.

What it measures: High-danger shots on goal a skater generates per game (shots + goals from inside the slot zone), empirical-Bayes shrunk toward the position-group rate.

How to read it: Natalie Spooner #1 among full seasons — the 2024 MVP and prototypical slot power forward (51% of her shots are high-danger). Kendall Coyne Schofield, Sarah Nurse, Sarah Fillier, Hilary Knight follow. Reads as a shot-location profile, not raw scoring: Marie-Philip Poulin sits mid-elite because she's a higher-volume all-areas shooter. Defensemen sit near zero — correct.

Power-Play Production (PPQ)(PPQ-lite)

Who drives the power play.

What it measures: Power-play points (goals + assists on PP goals) per game, empirical-Bayes shrunk toward the position-group rate.

How to read it: Sarah Fillier tops it; the defender sub-board surfaces the real PP quarterbacks by their assist-heavy profile — Erin Ambrose (21 PP assists to 1 PP goal) is the textbook PP1 QB, with Renata Fast and Ella Shelton behind. Elite PP forwards (Carpenter, Poulin, Stacey, Heise, Jenner) fill the top.

Defense

High-Danger Save % Above Expected (HDSV+)(HDSV+)

Saves on the dangerous chances — the goalie stat that doesn't lie.

What it measures: Goalie save% on shots from the high-danger slot (within ~40px of the net in the tracked coordinate grid), versus the league-average high-danger save rate. Empirical-Bayes shrunk toward league mean so small samples don't crown the board.

How to read it: Ann-Renée Desbiens #1, Gwyneth Philips, Aerin Frankel, Emerance Maschmeyer lead — the canonical PWHL #1 starters. Like the NHL version, it's one honest axis: a high-volume starter can rank mid-pack here if her value is workload over pure slot stopping. Weakest results (Hensley, Rooney) sit at the bottom.

Physical Index(Physical Index)

Hits plus blocks — who does the dirty work.

What it measures: Hits delivered plus shots blocked, per game, empirical-Bayes shrunk toward the position-group rate.

How to read it: Renata Fast #1 — the league's prototypical physical workhorse defender. The board is dominated by defensemen (correct for a hits+blocks axis); top shot-blockers (Wilgren, Ambrose, Barnes, Winn) are defensive D, top hitters (Fast, Guilday, Fratkin) and the lone forward near the top (Blayre Turnbull) are the known physical players.
